How could we not mention local cooking and Portuguese wines = after all, if you are visiting, you need to sample both!!!
The fresh seafood, local vegetables and fruits are tasty beyond belief. Wander into the hills, and meat becomes the staple, either hunted or raised on local farms.

Beer, Wine, Spirits

Sagres & Super Bock - the local Portuguese beers
Alentejo wines - vast southern region with strong wines
Algarve wines - less well known, full-bodied wines
Dao wines - produced in the mountains of north central Portugal
Douro wines - from Porto region along the Douro river
Vinho Verde wine - a young, "green wine", slightly fizzy
Porto - from Porto, naturally, red and white (served chilled is delicious)
Aguardente - literally "burning water", a spirit distilled from medronho, fig, or alfarroba

Food Dishes

Ameijoas a Bulhao Pato - clams with garlic and white wine
Bacalhau a Bras - shredded, salted cod, with garlic, matchstick fried potatoes, and scrambled eggs
Cataplana de marisco - steamed seafood cataplana
Frango da Guio - spicy chicken with chili peppers
Javali Estufado - wild board stew
Pastel de Nata - sweet, creamy egg tart, an invention of nuns from surplus egg yolks
Polvo a Lagareiro - Grilled Octopus, a Tavira speciality
Sardinhas Assadas - Grilled sardines, a summer staple
Tarte de Alfarroba - carob tart, also with almonds, oranges, and figs
